Reading "Uncle Tom's Cabin"

I think James Baldwin was right about sentimentality is a characteristic for the novel and there exists racism. First I think Stowe made Tom too christ and idealistic. For example, at the beginning of the book, Tom read the Bible and Tom got beat by white people at the last part of the book, I think Tom is like a priest who is trying to save the world rather than a black man try to struggle against the unfair world and get freedom. Especially when George Shelby came back to home after Tom dead and tried to give freedom to the black people, those black people did not happy about get freedom and begged George not let them go. It seems like they think being slaves for a kind white farmer is better than have freedom. They were enslaved and unaware of it. I think there shows racism. And I think Stowe diluted the darkness of slavery and emphasized the power of religion.

I agree with your comment you said that Uncle Tom is too christ and idealistic. In the novel, Uncle Tom is a honorable hero who is respected by other slaves even his enemies since Tom not only suffers from the ruthless exploitation, but also believe the God. It seems like he does not want to get freedom but influence others with bible and God.
In this novel, people would have a question that slaves are right to struggle with freedom and democracy, however, whether using violent means to revolt against slavery is right or not. Stowe shows her opinion of this question. In her view, if everyone can devoutly believe the God, then they will become followers of the God.
